Royalty

bergamot haze
images flutter and fold
card tricks in a
pine grove of sleep
tiny gold crowns
buried in the leaves
sparkle through ash and charcoal
the seaport is festooned with dragons
the brick pavilions are filled with paper
instructors hands are filled with dogma
the painter on the roof
is named August he is
harvesting spirals
the fishermans says Ah
the black and white dog is prince
of the sea

April

across from the white cemetery
an espresso bubble
the plain speak is turgid relief
pallid blue the speech
of memory

she wore a green gown
and waded hem-soaked into
an ocean of sand
ran across the tressel singing

the black and white pages have turned
into color
an essential parachute has collapsed
tiny spiders
rule the Earth

After the Solstice

What is he thinking
As he watches the snow fall now
Outside the sky-like window
Of the exotic bakery?

It is past the solstice now:
The abnormal days of rain
Swept behind us; part of the tunnel's memory,
Part of the inflatables

And the three swinging snowmen,
Mechanical electric deer,
Heaped plates and platters, desserts and promises,
Mountains of bright paper, boxes and bows.

We drove headlong into the dark sea,
Guided by the rushing world, oblivious to war
And carnage, wrapped in our
Excelsior thoughts.

Unimaginable foreign lives
Passed like insects, their unique fates
Flickering like common miracles
Glimpsed through a yawn.

There is a stonecutter nearby
Who built a solstice cave of stone.
For one week only, and only on immaculate days
Blue as pearls

Could one sit and watch the light
Enter the carved bird's mouth,
Sound the note of rebirth, until the lengthening bar
Resumed the shape of a human form.

Grisaille Study

This is a homework assignment from the Colored Pencil Class in which we practice the "grisaille" technique. "Grisaille" is French for grey or shadow, and refers typically to a drawing or painting done all in tones of gray. Our assignment was to create a grisaille drawing and then add one color to it.

Colored Pencil Still Life

I am taking a Colored Pencil Class this summer at the art school where I work. The teacher is excellent. I find myself thinking about color all the time. This is the still life I am working on in class.

Images From the Heart of Winter

In the heart of winter, when one wanders the white, icy streets, one often chances upon some strange apparitions, such as this window display of a local flower shop. . .

or this inverted icicle mounted in the snow. . .
